Troubleshooting
The Chatsavo panel doesn't appear, a chat doesn't show up in search, an AI site changed its layout — what to check and how to fix it.
The panel doesn't appear
Check in this order:
- You're on a supported site. Today that's
chatgpt.com,chat.openai.comandclaude.ai. Gemini, Grok and Alice are in testing; DeepSeek, Perplexity and GigaChat come later. - You reloaded the page after installing. Tabs opened before installation can't see the extension. Press F5.
- The panel isn't collapsed. Look at the left edge of the page: if there's a narrow tab with the Chatsavo icon, click it.
- The extension is enabled. Open
chrome://extensions(edge://extensionsin Edge,browser://extensionsin Yandex Browser,opera://extensionsin Opera,brave://extensionsin Brave,about:addonsin Firefox) and check Chatsavo's toggle. In Firefox the early version is a temporary add-on that disappears when the browser restarts — load it again viaabout:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox(see installation). - It has site access. In Chrome and Edge, click the puzzle icon → Chatsavo and make sure it's allowed to read data on the site. In Firefox:
about:addons→ Chatsavo → Permissions — access to the AI sites should be on. - Another extension isn't in the way. Other ChatGPT and Claude organizers can overlap the sidebar. Disable them temporarily and reload.
A chat doesn't show up in search
Open that chat once. The extension only reads what the page itself loads: it remembers every chat's title from the site's list, and a chat's text when you open it. If you haven't opened a chat in a while, it won't match on its text — but it will match on its title. Open it, and a second later it's fully searchable.
If you did open it, check:
- Scope. The "This site / All sites" switch — the chat may be on the other site.
- Filters (Pro). Remove
folder:,after:and other filters and try again. If you see "Didn't understand: …" under the field, a filter has a typo. - Free version. It searches the text of up to 200 chats on the current site. The rest are found by title.
- Inactive site. On the free version, new chats are saved only on your two active sites. Check Settings → Sites.
If nothing helps, search for one rare word from the chat with no filters. If that doesn't find it either, contact us.
The search shortcut doesn't work
Chatsavo uses Alt+Shift+F. Ctrl/Cmd+K stays with ChatGPT's and Claude's built-in search. If Alt+Shift+F is taken by another extension or the OS, assign your own: chrome://extensions/shortcuts in Chrome and Edge; in Firefox, about:addons → gear → Manage Extension Shortcuts.
An AI site changed its layout
ChatGPT and Claude update their interfaces regularly. Sometimes afterwards:
- dragging from the native list stops working;
- the Move to… button doesn't appear on hover;
- jumping to a search result doesn't scroll the chat.
Your data is unaffected: folders, texts and the index are stored separately from the site. We watch for changes and ship fixes, usually within a few days. Until the fix lands:
- file chats from the Chatsavo panel menu: three dots → Move to…;
- open chats from the Chatsavo panel or search results;
- install the fixed version once it's out: download the new zip from /install and replace the folder, then click Reload on the extensions page (
chrome://extensions;browser://extensionsin Yandex Browser).
If you spot a breakage before we do, let us know: which site, what stopped working, your browser, and your Chatsavo version (shown in chrome://extensions).
The site got slower
Chatsavo's heavy lifting — indexing and search — runs in a background process, off the page. If a site feels slow, disable Chatsavo, reload, and compare. If it's noticeably slower with Chatsavo, tell us — that's a bug and we'll fix it.
"That didn't work. Try again — your data is safe"
The action failed because of a temporary glitch, usually right after the extension updates. Reload the page and try again. If it keeps happening, restart the browser.
Contacting support
Include your browser and its version, your Chatsavo version, the AI site, and the steps that led to the problem. There's no need to send chat texts.
