Privacy: what stays with you and what goes to the server
Where Chatsavo stores chats, what the server sees, and how to download a JSON backup, restore it into an empty data store or delete local data.
The short version: chat texts are stored only in your browser. They go to a server only when you click "AI summary" yourself (a Pro feature coming in the next updates).
What stays only with you
| Data | Where |
|---|---|
| Chat message text | The extension's database in your browser |
| Chat titles, dates, links | Same |
| Folders, pins | Same |
| Search index | Same |
| Panel settings | Extension storage in your browser |
AI sites and other extensions can't see this data: it lives in Chatsavo's own storage, not the page's.
What goes to our server
Only what's needed for the trial and Pro:
- your key (if you entered one);
- a random device ID — generated by the extension, not tied to your computer or accounts;
- browser type and extension version;
- at trial start, a hash of the device ID and subnet, so there's one trial per browser.
We don't receive chat texts or titles, page URLs, browsing history, cookies, or anything about your AI site accounts.
How Chatsavo reads chats
A small script on the AI site copies the chat-list and chat-content responses that the page already loaded on its own when you opened the site or a chat. It:
- changes nothing in the site's requests or responses;
- doesn't read or forward cookies or auth tokens;
- makes no requests of its own to the AI site.
That's why Chatsavo only knows the text of chats you've opened, and why it has no effect on your account.
Site access
The extension asks for access only to chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com and claude.ai. When Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity, GigaChat and Alice support arrives, each site will be added separately. Chatsavo can't see any other sites you visit.
In Firefox, the extension declares that it collects no data, and the browser shows this at install.
Features coming later
- AI summary (Pro). Summarizing a chat means sending its text to a model through our server. That only happens when you click the button. Before the first use, Chatsavo shows a separate dialog explaining it and asks for your consent. We don't store request contents.
- Sync between devices (Pro). End-to-end encrypted: data is encrypted in your browser with a key derived from your passphrase, and the server stores only ciphertext it can't read. If you forget the passphrase, synced data can't be recovered — we'll warn you when you turn it on.
Both stay off until you turn them on.
Analytics
Chatsavo doesn't send usage statistics today. If anonymous counters are ever added (no texts, URLs or personal data), they'll be off by default and on only with your consent.
Your data, your call
Downloading all local data as JSON is available on every plan. Files up to 25 MB (26,214,400 bytes) are also restorable by this version. Larger files are still downloaded in full as data exports, but this version does not import them back. The file is processed only in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.
Download your data
Open Settings → Your data → Download everything (JSON). If the result is at most 25 MB, Chatsavo names it chatsavo-backup-….json and it can be restored by this version. If it is larger, the complete file is still downloaded as chatsavo-data-export-….json, but it is export-only in the current version.
The JSON contains data Chatsavo has already saved locally: chat titles and messages, folders, pins, and any tags, rules, prompts and saved searches. It does not include your license, trial state, panel preferences or browser settings. The JSON file is not encrypted: anyone who has it can read the saved chats.
Restore from JSON
Restore is available only when the local data store is empty. It does not merge with or automatically overwrite existing data.
- Open Chatsavo Settings. Close ChatGPT and Claude tabs during the restore so the extension does not save new chats.
- Under Restore a backup, click Restore from JSON and select a Chatsavo backup of up to 25 MB (26,214,400 bytes).
- Wait for the file to be checked. Review its name, creation date and the number of chats, messages and folders in the preview.
- Click Restore data to confirm the import. Nothing is written before this step; choose Cancel to stop.
- Wait for the success message. The search index is rebuilt in your browser, and you can then reopen the AI sites.
If your data store already contains data, download it first and check the message after export. Only a file that Chatsavo reports as restorable should be treated as the backup you will use for this restore flow. To replace the current data with your chosen backup, go to Your data → Delete all data, confirm with Delete, then repeat the restore. This does not delete chats from the AI sites.
A file with the wrong format, invalid data or a size above the limit is rejected before anything is written. Use a Chatsavo backup; importing archives from other extensions or exports from the AI sites is not supported yet.
Delete local data
Settings → Your data → Delete all data removes folders, saved texts and the search index after confirmation. Your chats on the AI sites are not affected.
Uninstalling the extension also removes all its data from the browser.
We don't
- sell or share data with third parties;
- show ads;
- open our own pages unless you ask.
